Visual communication in spatial environments
The studio is developing a concept of educational modules for the art museum that convey the various facets of woodcut printing to visitors. An inviting, associative text follows the principle of woodcut printing: typography becomes a spatial and tactile experience by being “carved out of wood.”
The first thematic module deals with topics such as line and surface, positive and negative, tools and materials. A film, shot in cooperation with students from Reutlingen University, shows the creation of a color woodcut, “Tassensturz N°1,” in the studio of Stuttgart artist Martina Geist. Printing blocks and prints in drawers on the same side of the module illustrate the process and result. Printing blocks that visitors can touch and a stamping station allow visitors to understand the process.
A large display case on one side of the module shows tools and materials used in woodcut printing. The module is self-explanatory and can be used flexibly in different museum rooms. Its non-rectangular floor plan reflects the spatial conditions in the half-timbered museum building.
